Southeast newspaper honored in statewide KIPA Contest



The Southeasterner, the student-produced newspaper of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, has been honored with several awards issued recently during the Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association Conference (KIPA) held in Lexington.

SKCTC student Kathleen Coots collected a second-place award for a signed column while Tara J. Moore garnered a second-place award for her account of budgetary cutbacks.

Third-place in the news category was issued to Ashley Fields. The paper’s editorial staff was awarded a second-place for an editorial regarding the 2008 presidential election. Sharing the editorial and staff awards were Brooke Sergent, Sabrina Roberts, Jacob Monhollen, Valenie Farley and Ashley Fields.

The Southeasterner was also honored with a collection of honorable mention awards for stories penned by Meagan Salyer, Jacob Monhollen and Casey Pollitte. A pair of HM awards was presented to the paper’s staff in areas of page design and layout; additionally, dual-credit student Marshall Tolliver received an honorable mention for his photography essay.

The Southeasterner was also judged to be one of the top papers within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System collecting 13 awards as part of the 2009 Student Newspaper Competition.

Southeast Professor Carlton W. Hughes serves as sponsor of the Southeasterner. Assisting him is Jamie Vaught, Theresa Osborne and Chris Jones.
